Spiced Coffee BBQ Sauce

I would like to offer the suggestion to Bath & Body Works that they introduce a new scent that’s sure to “drive the guys wild”: BBQ Sauce.  For real.  It’s sweet, spicy, a little tangy, and full of character. Oh, and it tastes good, like really freakin, hold the phone good.  I would buy it.

Or, you could just make a batch of actual BBQ sauce, fill the kitchen with that smokey, peppery aroma, and then stand at the counter and eat it by the spoonful…umm, I didn’t do that (I totally did that).

This recipe uses ketchup, but you could easily substitute fresh or frozen tomatoes that have been pureed and cooked down to a thicker consistency.  With the spices in this recipe, it would be great on quesadillas, a fried egg sandwich with avocado, or even as a southwestern pasta sauce (I’m thinking black beans, corn, diced bell pepper, green onions, shredded red cabbage and macaroni).  Or you could go a different direction and do glazed grilled salmon or chicken wings.

The possibilities are endless, as is my appetite for this crazy-good condiment. But seriously, who’s with me…a BBQ sauce scented candle?  I could dig it.

Spiced Coffee BBQ Sauce

Recipe slightly adapted from tastykitchen.com

1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
1 cup ketchup
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup finely chopped shallots or onions
1/2 cup sweet red chili sauce
2 cloves minced garlic
2 T soy sauce
2 T ground cumin
1 1/2 T chili powder
1/2 – 1 tsp chili garlic sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Combine all ingredients together in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 45 minutes, until slightly reduced and thickened, stirring occasionally. Serve warm or cool completely and refrigerate. Will keep for about 2 weeks.
